Our Current Mission- Kenya

KENYA SCHOOL-BUILDING SERVICE TRIP

Led by Student-Athletes Leading Social Change (SALSC)

Who: The Kenya Service Trip is available for all current and former college student-athletes.

What: A 10-day service trip to Kenya to build a school and transform a community.

When: July 7 – July 16, 2012

Where: Beautiful Kenya. We will fly into Nairobi, the capitol of Kenya; then take a bus to an impoverished community in the Maasai Mara, roughly 100 miles west of Nairobi.

Why: To experience/explore the world and make a significant difference for an impoverished community by building a school, enhancing health care, supporting clean water, and providing alternative sources of income.

How: Student-athlete leaders are teaming up to Adopt a Village in Kenya. Over the last two years SAs from Illinois, Michigan, Lehigh, North Carolina, Central Michigan, and Iowa State have collectively raised over $100,000 to assist poverty-stricken villages in Kenya and Ecuador.

Service Trip Highlights:

- work side by side with fellow SAs and the Maasai tribe to build a school for their community.

- play with the children of the community and learn firsthand about a very special culture.

- do a “Water Walk” and walk a mile in the Mamas shoes to help fetch their water for the day.

- participate in hands-on workshops and learn about poverty-related issues in Africa.

- spend an unforgettable day in the Mara going on safari where you just might see lions, cheetahs, rhinos, giraffes, elephants, hippos, gazelles, and baboons all in their natural habitat!

- bond with other amazing current and former student-athlete leaders from across the nation!

- go on a life-changing service trip that will significantly impact how you see the world!

Accommodations and Meals: Mobile campsite with army-style tents, beds, solar showers, and pit toilets. Cooks are trained to make typical western meals and are served in the Mess Tent. Stay in shape by running and working out with fellow SAs and Maasai Warriors.

Estimated Cost: $1,050 plus flight costs (estimated $1800 to $2200 depending on departure city). Travelers must also raise at least $250 toward the school-building project. A $750 travel deposit is due by Feb. 22, 2012 to reserve a spot on the SALSC Travel Team.
