Erica Prosser's Story
As a junior at Lehigh University, I have been given the opportunity to initiate change on many different levels. My decision to go to Lehigh was influenced by several factors, most importantly the prestigious academic reputation, as well as the potential of the Women’s Basketball Program. I felt that this university provided me with the chance to excel in the classroom, while playing the sport that I love most. Not only did I feel a sincere connection with the people on campus, but I felt that the basketball program was one in which I could make a major impact. Knowing that I had the ability to contribute significantly to the success of a team was certainly a deciding factor in my college choice. The coaching staff granted me the opportunity to change the program; to be a key player in the championship tradition they are trying to build. I simply could not pass up such a promising opportunity. In my time at Lehigh, I have found that that same desire to make an impact influences all of the extracurricular activities in which I engage. Thus, when I heard of Student-Athletes Leading Social Change (SALSC), I recognized it as a perfect conduit through which to I could truly impact my community.
As an Africana Studies major, I have been exposed to an abundance of academic work about issues that affect the many communities of Africa. I have learned about extreme poverty, inadequate education systems, and elevated mortality rates. Additionally, I have gathered that proper education, whether scholastic, financial, or health related, is vital to a community’s improvement. However, all of this information has come to me via academic journals, scholarly reports, and individual research. SALSC’s initiative is particularly important to me because it is a call for action in which I have a chance to participate. The trip to Kenya in July is an opportunity to experience a part of African culture in a hands-on way. It is a chance for me to apply the knowledge I have gained through my studies, as well as learn even more by actively participating in a community development project. Furthermore, as an student-athlete, opportunities to travel abroad are rare due to the time commitment that Division 1 athletics require, thus, an organization founded for student-athletes is an excellent channel through which I can create positive change.
As I continue my academic career at Lehigh, I become more and more appreciative of the education I am receiving. Most of us take for granted the amazing opportunity we have in college because we have never been in the position in which so many Kenyan children find themselves. Moreover, my commitment to service and my desire to lead others in social change have urged me to pursue this project because of all of its potential global benefits. There is no better way to show appreciation for the education we have than to pass it on to those in need.
